The most trusted mechanical engineering reference book for Indian students & professionals.
Covers gears, springs, shafts, belts, chains and more, everything this calculator is based on.
Roller chain drives transmit power through positive engagement, no slip, exact speed ratio maintained. Widely used in conveyors, motorcycles, agricultural machinery and industrial equipment. This calculator computes chain pitch, length, centre distance and power rating for ANSI/ISO standard chains.
๐ How to Use This Calculator
Select chain pitch, ANSI 40 (ยฝ"), 50, 60, 80 or ISO equivalent.
Enter driver and driven sprocket tooth counts.
Enter centre distance (mm) and input power (kW).
View chain length (links), exact centre distance, speed ratio and chain tension results.
๐ Formula & Working Principle
Transmission Ratio i = zโ/zโ. Chain Length L = 2C/p + (zโ+zโ)/2 + (zโ-zโ)ยฒ/(4ฯยฒC/p). Chain Speed v = zโ ร p ร nโ/60000 m/s. Tangential Force F = P/v.
๐ก Worked Example
Sprockets: Driver 17T, Driven 51T, Pitch=12.7 mm (#40 chain), C=500 mm, nโ=1450 RPM. i=3:1. v=5.23 m/s. Chain length โ 120 links. Centre distance exact=498.4 mm.
โ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the minimum number of teeth on a sprocket?
Minimum 17 teeth on the driver sprocket, fewer teeth increase the polygon effect, noise and wear rate.
Q: How much chain sag is acceptable?
For horizontal drives, maintain sag on the slack side equal to about 2% of the centre distance. For vertical drives, keep sag to a minimum.
Q: What lubrication methods are used for chains?
Manual (below 600 RPM), drip lubrication (600โ2500 RPM), oil bath (2500โ7000 RPM), forced lubrication (above 7000 RPM). Choose the method appropriate for the speed.
Q: How do you check chain wear?
New #40 chain: 25.4 links = 508 mm. 3% elongation means 523 mm โ replace the chain. A chain wear gauge tool allows accurate measurement.
Q: V-belt vs chain drive: when to use which?
Chain: exact speed ratio, heavy loads, high temperature. V-belt: quiet operation, slight slip acceptable, vibration damping needed.
