πŸ“– ISO 286 Tolerances β€” Reading the System

ISO 286 defines the system of limits and fits for cylindrical features (shafts and holes). A tolerance designation like H7/g6 means: H7 hole (capital letter = hole), g6 shaft (lowercase = shaft). The letter defines the position of the tolerance zone relative to zero line; the number defines the tolerance grade (IT grade).

Higher IT grades mean tighter tolerances β€” IT5 and IT6 are precision fits (require grinding), IT7 and IT8 are normal engineering fits (fine turning or boring), IT9–IT11 are for general machining.

The three main fit types are: clearance fit (shaft always smaller than hole β€” for sliding, running), interference fit (shaft always larger β€” for press fits, shrink fits), and transition fit (may be clearance or interference depending on which end of tolerance each part falls).
