Motor & Gearbox Selector: Drive System Selection Guide

Selecting the right motor and gearbox is fundamental to drive system reliability and efficiency. Wrong selection leads to motor overheating, premature failure or insufficient torque. This selector tool recommends optimal motor power and gearbox ratio from application parameters.

๐Ÿ“‹ How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select application type, conveyor, pump, compressor, agitator, etc.
  2. Enter required output speed (RPM), load torque (Nยทm) and duty cycle (%).
  3. Specify ambient temperature and service factor.
  4. View motor power, gearbox ratio, efficiency and thermal derating results.

๐Ÿ“ Formula & Working Principle

Required Motor Power P = (T ร— N) / (9550 ร— ฮท). Service Factor applied: P_design = P ร— SF. Gearbox Ratio i = Motor speed / Output speed. Thermal derating factor based on ambient temperature above 40ยฐC.

๐Ÿ’ก Worked Example

Conveyor: Output torque 500 Nยทm, Speed 50 RPM, Duty cycle 80%, ฮท=0.92. P = (500ร—50)/(9550ร—0.92) = 2.85 kW. With SF=1.3: P_design = 3.7 kW โ†’ Select 4 kW motor. Gearbox ratio = 1450/50 = 29:1.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the service factor (SF)?

Service factor reflects the severity of the application. Uniform load (conveyor): SF=1.0โ€“1.25. Moderate shock (agitator): SF=1.25โ€“1.5. Heavy shock (crusher): SF=1.5โ€“2.0.

Q: What is a motor frame size?

IEC standard frame sizes (80, 90, 100, 112, 132โ€ฆ) define mounting dimensions. Motors with the same frame number can be directly interchanged.

Q: Should I choose IE2 or IE3 motor?

IE3 (Premium Efficiency) motors have better BEE star ratings and lower long-term energy costs. IE3 is mandatory in India for motors above 5.5 kW.

Q: What should the gearbox oil change interval be?

First oil change at 500 hours or 3 months (whichever comes first). Regular changes every 3,000โ€“5,000 operating hours or per manufacturer recommendation.

Q: When should a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) be used?

When variable speed is required, soft start/stop is needed, energy saving is important, or precise speed control is required.
