Formula
- vs = (π × D × n) / 60,000 → m/s
- vs (m/min) = vs (m/s) × 60
- SFPM = vs (m/min) × 3.28084
About this calculator
Part of our Machining & CNC Calculators collection. Cutting speed, feeds, RPM, cycle time, and tap drill charts.
How it works
Peripheral speed equals pi times diameter times RPM, converted to m/s, m/min, and SFPM. Rated-speed utilization compares your operating speed to the wheel manufacturer limit. Stay within the marked max RPM on the wheel blotter.

Worked example
200 mm wheel at 2,800 RPM, max rated speed 33 m/s.
- vs = π × 200 × 2,800 / 60,000 = 29.32 m/s
- Utilization = 29.32 / 33 × 100 = 88.9%
Result: 29.3 m/s (5,760 m/min, 18,900 SFPM) — Caution: above 85% of rated speed.
When to use
- Checking wheel peripheral speed before mounting
- Converting between m/s, m/min, and SFPM
- Verifying RPM stays within blotter max for wheel diameter
Limitations
- Max rated speed must come from the wheel blotter label
- Does not balance wheel or check flanges and guards
- Dressing and wear change effective diameter slightly over time
FAQ
- What is a safe wheel speed?
- Never exceed the max RPM or m/s marked on the wheel blotter for the mounted diameter. Stay well below if the machine vibrates.
- Why does wheel diameter matter so much?
- Peripheral speed increases with both RPM and diameter. A larger wheel at the same RPM has higher m/s and higher burst risk.
- What does Caution mean?
- Operating above 85% of rated speed leaves little margin for overspeed or diameter measurement error. Consider reducing RPM.
